This list is part of Makatea's Terms of Service. It applies to every customer in every country. The customer is the one collecting and is responsible for how it uses the platform. Makatea may pause a send or suspend an account that does not follow it.
1. Which businesses cannot collect over WhatsApp?
WhatsApp Business Policies prohibit these businesses regardless of the company's licenses:
- Payday loans and paycheck advances.
- Peer-to-peer lending.
- Debt collection as a business, for example agencies that collect third-party or purchased portfolios.
- Bail bonds.
These businesses can use Makatea by email. Payment reminders from a business to its own customers are what Makatea is built for.
2. Who can you message?
Only people who gave you their number and agreed to receive messages from your business. Do not message references, relatives or the debtor's workplace about the debt. Do not message anyone who opted out.
3. What can a message not say?
- Threaten actions that will not be taken or that the law does not allow.
- Pretend to be an authority, a court or a law firm.
- Expose the debtor to third parties or mock them.
- Demand amounts that are not owed.
- Hide the name of the business that is collecting.
4. What other uses are prohibited?
- Sending advertising or bulk messages to people who are not your customers.
- Uploading third-party data without a lawful basis.
- Breaching the platform's security, reverse engineering it or accessing other organizations' data.
- Exceeding the limits of your plan.
- Reselling the service without a written agreement with Makatea.
- Any unlawful purpose.
5. What happens if an account does not comply?
Makatea notifies the customer by email. It may pause sends, ask for a correction or suspend the account under the Terms of Service. If Meta blocks a number because of how it was used, the block is the customer's responsibility.
6. Where do I report misuse?
Write to rodrigo@makatea.ai with the number that messaged you and a screenshot of the message. Makatea reviews the case with the business that sent it.
